All in Celebrating Tolkien
Hey, friends! Today I’m sharing a tutorial for creating your own ‘Hobbit Party’ invitations. I’m really happy with how this year’s invites turned out and I hope you’ll be inspired by these to create your own! This year’s invitation was inspired by Bilbo’s contract from the Dwarves in The Hobbit, and our RSVP card ‘contract’ is my favorite thing about it.
As our family’s annual Hobbit Party is just a few months away, I’ve been sitting down to plan out what I want this year’s celebration to look and feel like. I’ve just finished designing our invitations, although I want to keep those a surprise until our guests have received them!
However, I do want to share the printable menu I’ve just put together. Now that we’re on our tenth year (!!!!!) I really feel like we’ve gotten our usual menu settled and it’s easy to know what I’ll make. I’m sure there will be a few variations but here’s what I’m planning.
Friday’s dinner included: “Yavanna’s Garden Salad” (similar to this recipe), a meat and cheese board, pumpkin muffins, dinner rolls + honey butter, “man flesh” (beef jerky), Lembas, mini shepherd’s pies, stuffed mushrooms, and an autumnal veggie soup (not pictured). And cake!
While this year’s Hobbit Party may have been a bit different than in years passed, it was truly the highlight of our whole year. I’m so thankful for the friends who were able to visit throughout our party weekend, especially those who helped me pull everything together and keep everything running smoothly!
When we moved into our home last year, this pueblo-style playhouse had been built into the basement by the previous owners. I immediately knew I wanted to turn it into a Hobbit Hole for our children (and let’s be honest, myself), but it took me a while to come up with a good plan and find the time to get started.
This little hobbit party game was inspired by Bilbo Baggins’ famous question from Riddles in the Dark: “What have I got in my pocket?” Of course, while this was not a true riddle and Bilbo certainly hadn’t meant it to be one, it won the game for him and he escaped with Gollum’s ring. For this fun little game, participants will take turns choosing a “pocket” box — whoever finds the pocket containing Gollum’s ring first wins!
I wanted to share some photos from our Hobbit Party this past September. Better late than never, right? This was our first year hosting our Hobbit Party at our new house, and it turned out quite well! I’m so grateful to the friends who came over, several of them driving in from out of town, to spend the evening with us. I cannot wait until next year!

Since we would be moving before September when we host our family’s annual Hobbit Party, we wanted to throw one last Hobbit Party in our house with the friends we’ve made over the past three years here. This one was a bit different because it was in the middle of summer rather than the beginning of autumn, so I tried to keep things a little more bright and refreshing rather than cozy and warm.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on putting together a complete guide to hosting your own Hobbit Party and it’s been such a joy to work on it in my spare moments!
